Preparing for the first babysitting visit

A first-visit checklist for emergency contacts, routines, medication rules, household boundaries, updates, payment, transportation, and the return plan.

Write down information the sitter may need

Prepare one document with parent contact details, backup contacts, the home address, relevant health information, routines, household rules, and the expected return time. Explain which information is for an emergency and which describes the normal routine.

Review the document together before leaving. Do not assume that a profile or earlier interview covered the details of this specific visit.

  • Parent and backup contact numbers
  • Home address and emergency instructions
  • Allergies, medication rules, and relevant health information
  • Meals, bedtime, comfort routines, and screen-time rules
  • Expected return time and delay plan
  • Permission concerning outings, visitors, and photos

Walk through the home

Show the sitter exits, first-aid supplies, fire equipment, locks, alarms, and any areas that are off limits. Explain how pets should be handled and whether anyone else is expected to arrive.

Demonstrate equipment the sitter is expected to use. If a task requires training or creates uncertainty, change the plan rather than relying on a rushed explanation.

Confirm duties and boundaries

Repeat the agreed childcare duties, start and end times, pay, and transportation. Discuss food, bath time, bedtime, homework, discipline, visitors, deliveries, and use of household devices.

Tell the sitter when to contact you and what requires an immediate call. Make sure they know which decisions they can make independently.

Agree on updates and delays

Decide whether you want an arrival message, a bedtime update, or contact only when needed. Too many required updates can distract from care, while no plan can leave both sides uncertain.

Explain what to do if you are late or cannot be reached. Confirm the backup contact and transportation plan before the visit begins.

End the visit with a short handoff

Return at the agreed time, ask how the visit went, and listen for changes in routines, meals, sleep, behaviour, or household issues. Complete payment as agreed and confirm any future dates separately.

Afterward, ask the children age-appropriate questions and record anything that needs follow-up. If the arrangement will continue, update the written instructions when routines or contact details change.
